Ragged,

soldiers
from

on
December

1777
to
begin
their
winter
encampment.
With limited tools, they began to erect crude log huts - which would be their home during the long, hard winter. While officers, as well as unlisted, moved into these primitive dwellings, higher ranking officers sought refuge and located their operations in some of the local farm houses.
This winter landscape captures the late evening sky as it comes to rest on one of these historic homes. Painted just as it appears today, this early 18th century home was settled and occupied by the Stephens family for generations. But during the infamous winter of 1777, it would serve General James Varnum as his "Winter Quarters."
