The
Brandywine
River
is
an
integral
part
of
the
history
of
Chester
County.
When
pioneer
Thomas
Moore
encountered
the
river
in
1716,
he
established
a
water-corn
mill
along
its
banks.
It
was
the
first
of
many
mill
that
would
be
built
on
the
edge
of
the
unsettled
western
frontier
of
Pennsylvania.
The
area
grew
into
a
tiny
village
that
prospered
and
became
known
as
Milltown.
In
1761,
Thomas
Downing
conceived
and
developed
a
complex
of
mills.
Soon
the
village
was
referred
to
as
Downing's
town
and,
in
time,
was
changed
to
Downingtown.
Painted exactly as it appears today, watercolorist Richard Bollinger has captured a rich part of the borough. In this most recent major work, Milltown, he features the classic 1920's architecture of the municipal building, unique quadruple arched bridge and the flowing waters of the timeless Brandywine.
