As
James
Wesley
drove
his
team
westward,
his
passengers
counted
the
mile
markers
along
Old
Lancaster
Pike.
The
light
snow
accompanied
them
since
Paoli
was
now
beginning
to
drift
and
travel
was
becoming
difficult.
Squinting
his
eyes
to
the
weather,
James
spotted,
off
in
the
distance,
the
light
he
had
longed
to
see.
he
announced
to
the
others
that
"the
sign
of
the
Ship"
is
near.
Although they could not all read, they all knew about "the sign of the Ship." It had been there since the inn was built In 1796. It meant comfort, warmth, and a place to rest. As the coach drew near, another image came into view. It was the tiny cross placed high upon the newly built church across from the tavern. For some weary travelers, the cross was a mystery that somehow represented peace and rest. But to countless others, it was a welcomed reminder of enduring hope and their personal faith. "Crossroads" by Richard Bollinger captures this historic landmark as it appears today on US Route 30 in Exton, Pennsylvania.
