VILLAGE
OF
ANSELMA,
CHESTER
COUNTY,
February,
1871
-
In
just
a
few
days,
the
owner
of
this
mill
will
have
his
life
changed
...
and
perhaps
begin
to
make
history.
Trying
to
free
the
mill's
frozen
water
wheel,
John
Oberholtzer
will
be
seriously
injured.
As
a
result,
instead
of
updating
the
mill's
technology,
he
instead
focused
on
developing
a
village
around
the
mill
-
building
homes,
barns,
a
post
office,
creamery/ice
house,
general
store,
and
the
Pickering
Valley
Railroad
Station.
in
doing
so,
Oberholtzer
inadvertently
helped
save
the
mill
for
generations
to
come.
As
a
result
of
his
efforts,
along
with
those
of
future
owners
like
Oliver
Collins,
today
Anselma
is
one
of
only
a
handful
of
early
American
mills
with
all
its
original
machinery
and
contents
intact.
Renowned watercolor artist, Richard Bollinger, painted the Anselma Mill much as it appeared about 130 years ago. Thanks to its early owners (just 5 families) and the hard work of dedicated preservationists, today the mill is a treasured place to visit and walk among the days gone by.
