A New Song

I’ve had this painting in my head for a long time. The original concept is not at all like what you see here. I wanted to create a “blues” painting that included my 1967 Martin guitar. I love the rhythm of the blues, the cord progressions, and those heartfelt, hard life lyrics. I wanted to “paint” the blues.

All still life paintings begin by actually building the still life. Because this was to be a blues work of art, I determined that every object in the piece had to be blue. Blue pottery, blue fabric, blue jeans jacket, blue wallpaper, everything with the exception of the guitar was to be blue. I worked for days arranging the objects, moving lights, changing and rearranging. But whatever I did the guitar always stood out. Of course, it stood out…it was the contrast! Everything was blue except the warm wood tones of the guitar. Then it hit me, the blues are all about contrast. They are songs of loneliness and rejection hoping for love and acceptance. Tunes crying out for contrast between an empty life and a life that’s full and free. That’s the contrast found in the blues.

I decided to radically alter my composition to reflect the brighter side of life. I chose to paint the blues away with “A New Song.” The cool reflective hues in my palette shifted to bold, lively colors symbolic of a life that has been transformed…that the “New Song.” If you get a chance, check out Psalm 40, verses 1 to 4. There are some pretty serious contrasts going on there, not to mention some very powerful blues lyrics.
